Like life in traditional society, but unlike football and basketball, the other two major American team sports, baseball is not governed by the clock and amazes many foreigners that it is the national sport in a fast-paced United States. Being a very popular team sport, apart from North America also in Latin America, the Caribbean and East Asia, baseball is a bat-and-ball game in which a pitcher throws a fist-sized hard ball past the hitting area of a batter. The batter, who belongs to the other team, then attempts to hit the ball with a smooth, cylindrical bat made of wood or metal. The team will score only when the batter manages to successfully batting the ball and then runs over four markers existing on the diamond-shaped baseball field, placed on a ninety feet distance from each other and called bases, while his opponents try at the same time to catch the ball and successfully throw it by using their hands to their teammates located at each of the four bases before the batter manages to cover the last ninety feet and reach the last base.
While a football game comprises exactly sixty minutes of play and a basketball game forty or forty-eight minutes, baseball has no set game duration. The pace of the game is therefore leisurely and unhurried, like the world was once, before the deadlines, schedules and hour wages. As a matter of fact, baseball belongs to that time when people had all day to play a game. Much like traditional rural life, baseball proceeds according to the rhythm of nature, specifically the rotation of the Earth around itself and the Sun. In fact, during its early years, baseball was not played during the night, which meant that this traditional leisure game was over before sunset at the latest.
Today, the baseball season follows a traditional pace, following the cycle of the active part of the agricultural year. Baseball season begins with the coming of spring, stretches through the long hot days of the summer, and culminates, like the growing season with its harvest, in the fall. From November through March, baseball players were inactive once, but now most of them migrate to the warmer climates of Central and South America.
Finally, just as rural societies everywhere observed the three phases of the growing season with festivals, so does baseball. There is the opening day of the season marked by the arrival of spring. Then the annual All-Star Game matching the best players from the two major leagues comes in midsummer, and last in October, the baseball championship competition called World Series, often called the fall classic, begins.
With worldwide famous players, like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, baseballs golden age transformed these sports athletes to epic figures who inspired many and reminded people why keeping our roots alive should be considered of extreme importance. In fact, a measure of baseballs standing at the heart of American life is its transcendence of the boundary between popular and high culture. More than the other two favorite American sports, baseball has had a crossover appeal, attracting interest from groups with little else in common. It is first and foremost a form of popular entertainment. But it has also been the subject of serious literally treatment and rigorous quantitative analysis. In the national life of the United States, baseball has made a place for itself in both the arts and sciences.

I reflect on some of the conversations that some guys have had in the past about women taking jobs that are traditionally male. And I can recall a woman that I knew as child who would fall in the category of women who’re trying to perform the duties reserved for a man.
She was a single mom of three kids that was once married to a guy who knew members in my family. One day he decided that he no longer wanted to be a father/husband, and left her and his kids for a woman he’d met while visiting the local clubs, and moved back to his home state. Leaving her and the three kids behind. She was a mess, bills where due, she was a stay at home mom with no job training, and no work experience. So it was hard for her to get a job working as an administrative assistant t or secretary. Instead of drawing government assistance she received work at the local dinner where my grandmother was a cook. She earned at that time about $7.50 plus tips as a waitress working double shifts, after taxes and social security was taken out of her check she wasn’t bring enough money home to pay for rent, utilities and child care, so her kids would stay with us from time to time where I would baby sit. She ended up getting sick, and lost her job, where the kids moved in with us until she could get back on her feet. One day while standing in the unemployment line, she saw an advertisement for the construction company that my father worked for an open position that paid about $18.00 an hour plus health/medical/dental benefits for the workers and dependents. All she would have to do is attend company training for four weeks (paid) in order to receive qualification for the job (based on company standards). She, and a few other single females (some with kids, some not) signed up for the openings and was hired soon after. She told me that the discrimination she and the other females suffered on the job was horrendous; I’m talking men exposing themselves while making lude comments about sexual orientation, sexist jokes, discrimination, it was horrible. But she said she never complained because she was making more on that job then what she was as a waitress plus benefits. I asked her why she decided to stay in such a work environment if the scrutiny she and many other females were faced with was so horrible? She told me
“I’ll do what I have to do to make a living for my kids, since my former husband won’t. I would rather them spit on me, and call me out my name than my kids spend another night cold and hungry”.
What do you guys think? Should she have begged for her job back at the dinner making about $2.00 over minimum wage at that time, pulling double shifts with no time for her kids, bring home a small pay check to support her family (because it’s traditionally female employment)? Or should she have stayed on the job that paid well (plus benefits) working less hours with training and room for advancement in order take care of her children, but face ridicule because it was traditionally male employment? Or should she have just given up and drawn government assistance (like she started too) and sat at home, with no job, no training and let the tax payers take care of her kids and herself? Which in your opinion is the better choice?
Edit: Elvis: let me go into a little detailed history about this woman and her ex-husband. The man she married was someone she’d known for a long time. The two of them grew up together in a small town outside of New Orleans, LA. They moved to Texas (my home state) around the same time my father and mother moved in search of employment when they had their first child. Thing was a little rocky after the second child, but he really changed after the third (the one he didn’t want.) this is when things started to really get crazy and he decided to leave. He felt like he “was trapped” and needed his space. They where together for almost 10- 12 years prior to separation. I seriously doubted she could foresee this happening between the two of them.
It wasnt until after the 3rd child that he met the woman of his dreams and chose to follow his destiny. Im not saying all men do this, but it does happen. And a lot more often then most will like to admit.

What I would like to hear is actual comparisons from our lifters here as to what percentage of a lat pulldown translates to a full body pullup. That is, how much do you have to pull on the lat pulldown machine for a single, your own bodyweight, and if you can do one pullup unassisted, from full downward extension. (This has always appeared much easier for smaller people from what I've seen than larger ones?)

The reason I would like some comparison on this is I would like to eventually try to meet one lifetime goal I set long ago - one full pullup. Ok you can all stop laughing into your coffee cups but since I'm a 5'9 220 lbs drug free master competing powerlifter with years of bench press and deadlift stresses to my shoulders AND long arms, I want to go about this in a careful and yes, logical fashion by training up to it. (And waiting until my meets are done for 2008 as well....with my other lifetime goal hanging at present and QUITE attainable after 10 years of building to it!).

Surely some of you have made this transition and can comment or give me your feedback on the needed lat pulldown vs single pullup conversion guess?

I also have in my plan to do spotted negatives from the top position as an additional strengthening exercise and also to test my necessary grip to execute this properly, coupled with location of hand positions to be as possible.

The rest of the picture is I am going to help others who ask me after I get my pullup, other ladies I know would like to give it a try and if I can do it, they'll believe they can (they have less size lol).

So how much in your experience did you have to pull down in order to pull up.

Controlled Body Movement The Key Essential For Your Golf Game

Basic body movement is essential in any sport. Of course it is
also essential for any type of physical activity we do.

As parents, we teach little children how to do the simplest of
things. This includes how to move and how to control movements
for precision and safety.

Basic body movement also means limiting movement to the essential
movement for what you want to do. We control the desired
movement. And, we prevent unwanted movement. We learn to keep our
movements just firm enough to be coordinated. We also learn to
allow just enough relaxation so the movements can flow through
their proper range with the most comfort.

For many golfers, if you think about your hands doing something
or even have much of your focus on your hands then, usually, you
will do something incorrect with your hands.

Basic body movement, under control, is to be your main focus.
When you become good at this part of your golf swing then can
you try advanced hand movements. But, any of these hand movements
should only be done in harmony with the dominant body and upper
arm movements.

Even your arm movements need more focus in the early learning
stages than any perceived hand movements. And, these arm
movements should focus on movements generated in the upper arms
which are as close to your body as possible.

A Special Lesson With A Good Golfer

A few years ago I did 2 golf lessons with a man who stood a
little over 6 feet tall. He was having trouble spraying his hits
with his mid-irons to his woods. I asked him to hit a ball with
a wedge. He chose his 64 degree lob wedge and promptly hit a
high, 95 yard hit.

What was he doing wanting a lesson from anyone?
Answer: He had one wrong move that he wasn't aware he was doing.

I used my interpretation of Fred Couples' looping swing to guide
him to the correct arm movement. When he tried my idea of Fred's
swing Andy hit the ball higher and 15 yards farther.

He did not want to develop that move but he understood how to
correct his error with the proper movement. He hit a lot of good
golf balls afterwards and knew why he did so.

Andy's other problem involved chipping. He had a good hand
movement in his chipping effort. He had no idea how to use that
good movement with the movements of his body. As well, he had no
idea of the importance of his body activity during his chipping.

A few minutes into the 2nd lesson he had learned how to time his
hand movements with his body movements. He also learned where
his hands should be in relation to his spine as he did the hand
movements that he wanted.

His chipping improved dramatically within the lesson. His
confidence was as high as possible that he could land a golf
ball where he wanted. And, all it took was understanding how his
arms and hands were to move in harmony with his body and also in
relationship to his body position.

How I Developed My Understanding Of Basic Body Movement

I taught physical education from Grades 1 to 9. In one short
span of time I could see the development of movement in all
stages of growth. I could also see the physical and mental effort
carried out by these children as they learned the skills and the
games which I taught.

I used to teach the various Grades a level of a game which they
could handle. I taught positional play in slow motion and then
introduced body movements which enabled the students to move
fluently up and down the playing surface. They quickly learned
this and asked for more. That is when I taught the various
skills. The game was taught first; and then came the skills.

In golf, there are a number of games played during a round.
* We try to get a better score than someone else.
* We try to get a personal best score during a round.
* We try to play against the golf course to get a par round
or better.
* We try to get a better score than par on each hole.

BUT, usually forgotten is the game of playing each golf shot as
good as we possibly can. It is this last "game" which I teach
in my golf lessons.

The free articles combined with the instruction modules will
teach you how to win "the game" of playing each hit during your
round of golf.

Relating this to teaching golf swing skills I emphasize basic
posture, alignment, control, and body movement. Arm and hand
activity do not get taught until my students learn basic
movements. Because of this, beginners and students who had never
hit the ball in the air soon hit draws with even their short
irons when they hit the ball over a fence.

You, The Ground, And The Golf Ball

We stand on the ground. The golf ball rests on the ground
(er, usually). Before we try to dislodge that golf ball from
its place on the ground we should learn a good method of relating
what we do from our "perch" on the ground.

Between our connection to the ground and the ball's position on
the ground we have a lot of body mass and joints along with
that "stick" thing. We need movement to make the golf ball move.
Therefore, we swing back and forth to make the golf club move
the ball. But, those joints want to do all sorts of contortions
during our golf swing efforts.

We need to develop an understanding of how to move at the fewest
possible joints and how to control or prevent movements of the
rest of our joints. This is basic to anything we do. It is very
important to this "confusing" skill called the golf swing.

But all that is history now as from merely seven elephants in 1975, the Pinnawela elephant orphanage now houses 65 elephants including several bred in captivity under the intelligent management of the National Zoological Gardens, Mr. Mudadeniya said.
The pachyderms are roaming free in the 25-acre coconut plantation where they eat grass in addition to a daily diet of around 75 kg of coconut palm, jackfruit and other leaves per animal. The baby elephants at the orphanage are bottle fed on milk by their handlers.
Situated in close proximity to the main highway that links Colombo and the hill capital of Kandy, the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela is one of the few places in the world where visitors could see at close quarters a large number of elephants roaming freely. It has also attracted scientists from around the world to study the behaviour of the elephants and Sri Lankas success in conservation.
It is estimated that Sri Lanka had a population of 30,000 elephants in 1815. The numbers however had dwindled to near extinction by the time the elephant orphanage was established in 1975. Since then the population has gradually increased to over 3,000 in the island nation.
Perhaps the most popular elephant activity at Pinnawela is the twice daily bath at the nearby river. They travel in procession to the river where they splash and play and get scrubbed and cleaned by their handlers for an hour each time. Its also the time when the cameras click furiously in the otherwise tranquil village of Pinnawela.
The Pinnawela orphanage is a classic example of sustainable tourism because it meets the needs of present tourists and the villagers simultaneously, remarked Mr. Mudadeniya.
The Pinnawela site is a regular tourist attraction that provides a meaningful experience to the tourists, raises awareness about sustainability and promotes sustainable tourism practices.
A visit to Pinnawela would also be the ideal opportunity to sample the wild natural beauty of the including scenic waterfalls, spice and tea plantations, bird and wildlife reserves, tropical jungle excursions and the luxurious yet eco-friendly accommodation.

Karen asked the following question.

Currently we allow our Managers on Duty to work with prospects. This accounts for 17% of our total club tours. I want to change this completely to where only our Sales Team does tours because they are the experts and can create a great first step. My question is what do we do when membership is not available or not here for a Sunday walk-in?

First let me commend you on your decision. I personally think it is a wise one. Lets face it; it is difficult enough to get fulltime salespeople to have good closing percentagesand these are the people who are in the profession of selling. Asking MODs to sell typically puts them in a position of discomfort. Being knowledgeable about the club and passionate about fitness does not make them good salespeople! This is NOT to say that some MODs wont be good salespeoplethey may bebut only the numbers can give you the real answer. That means measuring the closing percentage of everyone who works with prospectsincluding the MODs.

In todays hyper-competitive environment it is imperative that you maximize every single lead that walks through your club doors. Having a policy where only fully trained and qualified salespeople work with prospects will go a long way to achieving this goal.

Now that I have validated your choice, lets move on to your specific questions. You have actually asked two, slightly different questions. First, what happens when a tour arrives at the club and the sales staff is unavailable because they are either out to lunch or working with another guest?

In these instances you must train your front desk to be able to make a quick decisioni.e. does it appear that the salesperson would be available in the next 5-10 minutes? If the answer is then I suggest you have some sort of procedure in place where the MODs begin the Needs Analysis questions with the prospect, clearly communicating to them that they are only getting things started for John who is finishing up with another guest. Or, John will be back from lunch in a few minutes, let me at least get you started. Then, when the salesperson is available, they transition into taking over the tour.

Conversely, what if the salesperson just started a tour or just left for lunch and wont be back for an extended period of time? In this instance you must train your staff to try and book the person to come back for an appointment. m sorry, John wont be available until 2:15, is it possible that you can come back then or would you prefer to set up an appointment for another time? This alternate of choice (classic selling skills) helps to maximize the appointment setting.

If the guest does not want to book an appointment then you MUST train your staff to try and get the contact information. This is really the key strategy. Specifically, whether the sales unavailability is due to being busy, being on a break or being hours/days when there are no salespeople on site, front desk staff (or MODs) need to be trained to capture the guests information. This can be accomplished first by training them on how to book appointments (discussed earlier) or, as a last ditch effort, asking for the guests contact information so materials can be e-mailed to them. m sorry, we dont have anyone from the membership department in today but I can have them e-mail you some membership information tomorrow morning when they arrive; let me just get a piece of paper to get your information.

It goes without saying that training staff to be confident in either asking for the appointment or asking for the contact information is critical. Without contact information no sale will ever be made.

Of course, the converse argument is a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Why let a potentially ready to buy prospect walk out of the club; let the MOD tour them and perhaps a sale will be made. For some club operators this may work. For me, when my sales staff has a 74% closing ratio, it doesnt. Almost no MOD (unless they came up the ranks as a successful salesperson) will have a closing rate much over 45%. Personally, Id rather take the chance at losing the prospect by not coming back for a tour versus losing them because we did a poor job of selling.

Oh, sure, you can also argue that youll have your salesperson follow up after the MOD tour but in todays day and age its hard enough to get people to answer their phone when they want something from younever mind when they are avoiding you!

In closing, Karen I commend you for your decision. Now you need to put the training in place to maximize appointments booked or contact information obtained on prospects that walk through the doors during uncovered sales time.

When my wife and I announced that we were moving to Mexico, one of my wifes relatives asked us,
Why do you want to live with those dirty Mexicans?
Besides wanting to slap some sense into this person, I was particularly sickened (as in wanting to projectile vomit Linda Blair-style) by this hideous and most heinous stereotype. I have wanted to know since then where this originated.
I think, after doing what writers dotoo much research, I have finally found it.
Apparently, historians, those guys we all love to read, have been recording these views for years. David J. Webber wrote extensively on the origins of anti-Mexican stereotypes. (Thank you very much, David. It took only two years to find you!). Webber has carefully written on the views that are responsible for todays prevalent stereotypes of the Mexican people. He wrote,
Mexicans were considered, he wrote, bigoted, greedy, tyrannical, fanatical, treacherous, and lazy. These characterizations of the inhabitants of Mexico congealed especially during the decades following Mexicos independence from Spain in 1821 [1]
Many have written about the American-Mexican relations of that period. These writings, when taken as a whole, form a tidy little picture of how an American ideology portraying Mexicans as inferior evolved, thus justifying the American governments action against Mexico. Remember the Alamo?
Another one of those tantalizingly interesting historians, Cecil Robinson, wrote,
Pioneer America could find little to approve of in the Mexican society it collided with, being affronted in all its major convictions by Mexican attitudes, real and alleged. Americans, in their Protestant individualism, in their ideas of spirit and hard work, in their faith in progress through technology, in their insistence upon personal hygiene, in Puritanism and racial pride, found Mexico much to their distaste because of its priestly power, its social stratification with a pronounced sense of caste, its apparent devotion to pleasure and its indifference to cleanliness, and its reputation for pervasive sensuality Adding to all this was the Anglo-Saxons contempt for a people who had lowered themselves to a state of general cohabitation with the Indians and had thus forfeited the right to be considered (Robinson, 1977) [2]
Now isnt that interesting?
My point of bringing all this up is because of a Reuters news item, Bed bugs threaten to put bite on U.S. Hotel Industry. Writer, Paul Simao, reports of a lawsuit brought against the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel in New York in which a couple was severely bitten by bedbugs. Can you imagine that? The case was settled out of court. (For the record, the Helmsley folks have rectified the admitted problem.)
Bedbugs tend to occur in environments that are in disarray, untidy, messy(dirty?). In addition, their bites are not as harmless as one might think.
Bedbugs may be a vector for hepatitis B and, in endemic areas, for American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). [3]
So the cleaner your sleeping environment is the less chance you are going to have those nasty critters crawling all over you at night biting the snot out of you.
