Yesterday we had a long appointment with Dawn. We went over the what not to do and what is okay to do. Since information on FOP is all online Alan and I knew most of the information. However we learned a few things.
Alan asked about treating FOP with Celebrex. Basically Celebrex has the same functionality as the Naproxen that were giving her. Doctors do not like to prescribe Celebrex to children b/c of the potential side effects. We thought that Celebrex would be able to stop blood cells from forming which would prohibit any additional bone growth (original bone and FOP bone). Maybe it does but Erin wont be taking it right now.
I need to verify this but this is how I heard it: The actual gene that was found to mutate in Erin is not the exact gene that most FOP people have. Another person was diagnosed with FOP in 2006 has the same mutated gene that Erin has. I really hope this is a good thing. This will be on our list of topics to talk to Dr. Kaplan about. I am going to ask around on FOPonline about it. However, the gene is on the second chromosome pair. Now I really need to read the annual reports put out by Dr. Kaplan and his team. Correction: I have since found out that the actual FOP gene is on the long arm of the second chromosome. Erin does have the mutated genethe one and only ACVR1.
If Erin is in good health and her FOP hasnt been too aggressive (and she is of age), she can get pregnant without passing the FOP gene down to the baby. Its not that I want grandchildren (especially any time soon) but at least she has the option (againwhen she is of age). Dawn says there are procedures that can be done to completely eliminate any chance of passing the gene down. I am sure it has something to do with IVF of sorts. This little piece of news just made my day. At least there is hope. Right nowall I want is hope.
We got the paperwork for the handicap placards for the van. Ive been looking online and she wont qualify for SSI just yet. Alan said when she turns 18 years old shell be able to apply.
Erin is swollen around the neck and her lower back on the right side. These flare ups in the trunk are real tricky to spot. Dawn showed us where Erins right side of her back was hard and the left side is soft. We lifted her hair and her neck is swollen and hard. Ill start giving her the Naproxen today once she starts eating.
We are getting an electronic copy of Erins MRI and hopefully her other x-rays will be on the disc as well. Alan is going to post the MRI pictures on the website once we get them.
Dawn is going to email us the newest report from Dr. Kaplan and his team. Its dated for July 2008 so its fresh off the press. Its 70 pages longouch. She had things highlighted and flagged so she had been doing her homework.
After our meeting with Dawn I took Erin to see Dr. Shieble (her pediatrician). I think hes the best. He walked in with a stack of paperwork and he obviously had been doing his night-time reading as well. He did another examination and we talked about her current flare up. He had done his research on vaccines as well. Luckily most of the vaccines are available to administer sub-cutaneouseven the flu vaccine. The only one she cannot have is Hepatitis A. Oh wellre not going overseas anytime soon.
I got a good nights sleep last night and I am in a really good mood. My nausea is gone and I havent had a headache. I have a couple of events to go to this weekend in which I will go with friends. Ill have some time away from the house and away from the kiddos. Hopefully this will be the first time I will be away from Erin and not be emotional.
Dr. Kaplan has offered to examine Erin for free however we need to fund our way out there. We have to find out his schedule but were hoping to go back east in September. I look forward to seeing the grandparents and aunts/uncles in Tennessee. Then well head up to Philadelphia. I keep thinking of the possibility of seeing family that I havent seen in Y-E-A-R-S. I have cousins and an aunt and distant cousins in the northeast. To think that we all may get together again and its all because of Erin.

Ever since I was a little girl, I've always been fascinated by the tricks (back then I thought it was real of course hehe...) made by many magicians. I honestly get goose bumps whenever they play the saw tricks as I keep wondering what if the pretty lady gets hurt when the magician tries to cut her body into two...the thought of that happening especially with a pool of blood on the stage still makes me shudder to this day... Anyway, those are the usual ones where they normally will start with the balls or fire balls in and out of their mouth, then the disappearing pigeon or flowers. There are those who do the human disappearing acts and many others. Houdini on the other hand has a special magic skill. He is of course famous for his escape skill which is really fascinating. Some said he was once a spy for Scotland Yard...But I wonder if it holds any truth...I know there's a biography on him out there but I've never really have the interest to read about him...at least for now...Well, those are magicians during the olden days...There are many modern ones today such as Cris Angel...Honestly, I don't know who this magician is but a search on Google told me that he is an American illusionist, musician, escapologist, stunt performer, and actor. Certainly a man with multiple talents isn't he. I read he is also best known for starring in his own television show, Criss Angel Mindfreak. I've yet to watch any of his shows yet but if you are staying in Las Vegas or better still if you're one of the guests of Luxor Hotel, why not watch his performance. The much awaited performance I heard include Cirque Du Soleil performance featuring CRISS ANGEL called "CRISS ANGEL Believe". Oh by the way, in case you don't know, there's a Text Message contest going on where you could win 2 tickets to watch 'CRISS ANGEL Believe' live!.

I have gotten in the habit of watching Discovery Health in the evenings now that my roomie (lol), J is working second shift. I seem to always turn to that or HGTV. Anyways, on Tuesday night I was watching a program on Discovery Health about babies and their delivery. OMG. I cried almost the entire time. There were several women that were having twins and a couple of ladies having a single baby, but they were all high risk for one reason or another. Most of the babies were being delivered very prematurely There was one little girl in particular that was only twenty-something weeks when she was delivered and she was only a little over a pound at birth All of the babies from the show ended up doing fine and some were even shown going home. There was also a women that was 44 years old and delivering her daughter. She had been trying to have a baby for 12 years (since her first baby) and she had three miscarriages before this baby. It was just heart-breaking. I cried and cried and cried. It also makes me really want a baby. I know that its crazy for me to feel that way, but I just cant help it.
I had always thought I would have a baby by now, but it just has not worked out that way. Im not married, me and my boyfriend are not technically together, and I dont even know if he would ever want to have kids with me anyways. Things are just not together for me to have a baby, but my emotions just dont want to hear that. They are rebelling and doing their own thing.
I really dont know how to keep my mind from thinking about babies all the damn time! It is getting to the point that I am even having dreams about babies (one recurring dream about me having triplets with J). I have baby brain and I dont know how to get rid of it or if I even want to. Im not that old (shut up, 30 is still young) but I know that eggs dont stay fresh forever.

Finjan Inc., a leader in secure web gateway products, today announced its discovery of a server controlled by hackers (Crimeserver) containing more than 500Mb of premium data. The data included healthcare and business related data, as well as personal identifiable information (stolen Social Security Numbers). This data is part of the premium offering that the cybercriminals operating the Crimeservers were selling to the highest bidder online.
The compromised data came from all around the world and contained information from individuals, businesses, airlines and healthcare providers. The report contains examples of compromised data that Finjan found on the Crimeserver, such as:
* Compromised medical related data of hospitals and publicly owned healthcare providers
* Compromised business related data of a U.S. airline carrier
* Identity theft (stolen Social Security Numbers)
Some of the implications of stolen medical and patient data include: illegal and/or bogus treatments; obtaining prescription drugs for the purpose of selling them; loss of health coverage for the victimized patient; inaccurate records of victimized patients, which could result in incorrect and potentially harmful treatments. Healthcare providers could also face potential HIPAA violations or breach of general data protection legislation.

It's Memorial Day again, and I am sure all the jackass politicians will will be trotting out their somberest faces and speeches. It's the soup du jour and they better try to look awful sad for all the dead young men and women they placed in harms way. I hate when they euphemizethe dead as the "casualties of war." Say it like it is. There's nothing casual about your child being killed. By the way, while you're eating that hot dog and drinking those beers please give a thought to the people who died to give you the freedom tobe able eat it.
Call it "Dead Soldier's Memorial Day."
As to casualties of war, the streets of this country are filled with them. I am one. I never went to war, never will, never shot anyone, but I am a living causualty of war, by way of my father.
My dad was a soldier. When he was underage he lied about his age and got into the merchant marines, then later joined the Army and ended up in Korea.
He ended up in a mental ward of an Army hospital, voluntarily admitted. He couldn't cope with the horrendous things he had to do in Korea. Soldiers don't like to talk about it, but they don't just go over to other counties and sit around watching the (current) enemy scoot around taking pot shots at them.
Now my father may have been predisposed to mental illness but in those days they weren't too picky about screening recruits. So Daddy came home with "shell shock" or PTSD. He checked himself into a hospital, because that way he could check himself OUT.
He'd come home and because he couldn't cope, he drank. When he drink, he couldn't shut up about the war. He'd seat my brothers and I on kitchen chairs and drink and rave all about the war. This would go on at all hours. My mom would try to intervene at first, but gave up after many beatings. He'd be sorry then check himself into the hospital for a week or two, then come home. We dreaded it.
He progressed from mad ravings to genuine abuse, and my mother did NOT bear the brunt of it. First mentally, then physically, then of course sexually. Even in the confines of a closed ward in a Army hospital, he got little help. He'd come back and it would begin slowly and get worse and worse. Eventually he introduced a rifle into his madness, handing it to each of us, begging us to pull the trigger. I lived with it till I was 16, then threatened him with the police if he laid a finger sexually on me again. At that point I didn't care if he killed me. He never did, but he continued to beat and mentally abuseand when I left at 18, I had PTSD as well, only they didn't call it that, and for decades I lived with it..
I now know he was sick, I know the war either created it or exacerbated it, but there is small comfort in the "knowing." I left and I lived my own pain for a long time. Still do, in way.
Daddy eventually got the strength to blow his brains out with his rifle. The police were kind enough to give it back to my mother, who kept it in a unlocked closet.
My eldest brother shot himself in the head with it about 3 years later.
My 2 younger brothers have had myriad problems, one has attempted suicide a few times, the other has to say the least, an odd morality.
My mother died from cirrhrosis, after years of alcoholism.
Whe my father died, the obituary stated that he had received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for his service in Korea.
I don't blame everything he did on war, but I blame war for unleashing it. My story is not uncommon, soldiers come home every day wounded physicaly and /or mentally, but the nice thing is that they get medals....even the ones so flawed they can't cope.
I honor the soldiers who died bravely, were wounded, and came home alive and well despite the hell they went through. They deserve a Memorial. I alsomourn for all the families that go through their private hells withsoldiers who come home with severe PTSD.They are casualties of war.
I am a casualty of war.
We need to stop.

website, “Her neck and back were broken in six places, and her right arm, collarbone and five ribs fractured. Her right leg had been ripped open; she had sustained head injuries and massive internal injuries. She had severe lacerations to her abdominal area and had lost five litres of blood.” However, Janine is now a successful motivational speaker, an author and a pilot. Here is our interview: Janine, do you remember the actual accident? If not, from what point do you remember? I do not remember my accident. The medical team calls it post-traumatic amnesia but I have a different perspective on the events. I do not remember the accident because I had already started the process of leaving my body and therefore wasnt able to recall what happened at the accident site. Although I didnt have the typical near death experience i.e. the white light, I do recall a presence which stayed with me for most of the first week while I was in Intensive Care. For the first week I drifted between two worlds while my doctors fought to keep me alive. The desire to leave was incredibly strong as the physical pain was so intense, but something kept me connected to this world. I didnt know it at the time, but my father sat by my bedside for that entire week holding my hand and willing me to live, and perhaps that was the lifeline that kept me here. Did you ever have experience with pain before the accident? If not, do you remember how you felt if you came across someone who was in pain? Was it something you thought about or was it not on your radar screen, so to speak? My only experience with pain was associated with my sport and the injuries that one normally sustains in training. I had suffered from the normal range of injuries expected from elite athletes and had only just recently recovered from surgery for compartment syndrome when I had my accident. Do you feel your pain was well managed while you were in the initial stages of recovery? And in rehab? I spent six months in a spinal ward and due to the extent of my injuries I was on strong painkillers i.e. morphine and pethadine for months. When I was on these drugs I was still in intense pain however the difference was that I just didnt care about it anymore. It was extremely difficult weaning myself off these drugs and I did become dependent on them, however they were absolutely vital to me in the early stages of my accident. Once I left hospital I was off any strong drugs and have only needed them when I have returned to hospital for more surgery. Did you feel that the medical staff understood your pain? Overall the medical staff were understanding of my pain, however, there was an occasion when a new staff member decided upon herself that it was time I was weaned off pethadine despite it being prescribed by my doctors. I was in incredible pain and couldnt understand why until I discovered she had reduced my dose. The doctor was called and immediately gave me the dose that I was written up for. I thought it was incredibly insensitive of her. Do you have pain now? Due to my injuries I live with a certain level of pain, however I have managed to work out ways to make it manageable. When you were experiencing your worst pain, what worked for you and what didnt? I mostly manage my pain using natural methods that work for me. I find that when I stay active and flexible I am stronger and more able to cope with the demands on my body and my physical disabilities. I also practice tai-chi, and have regular massage and acupuncture treatments. However, I am a believer in complementary medicine and there are still times when I need assistance with my pain from mainstream medicine. Obviously, you had other issues to deal with besides pain, but what would you say played a larger role in how you felt during your recovery, your limitations or the pain? I am not a believer in limitations, there are only constructs of the mind. Even when I was in a wheelchair I decided that if I couldnt walk then I would fly, and for my first flying lesson I had to literally be lifted into the aircraft! I pursued this dream despite being in constant pain and having to undergo many operations, however my dream to fly helped me to overcome this. Is there anything that, when you think of your treatment, you wish you had tried or wish you had tried sooner? I believe I have tried everything that was available to me at the time. I am open-minded and believe that we need to take whatever action is needed to stay functional in our day to day lives. I am about to have a cortisone injection in my arm as I am suffering extreme pain from having to load up my upper body so much (due to the lack of strength in my legs) and all other avenues have been exhausted. Is there anything you would change about your treatment, if you could? No, I have dealt with everything in the best and most knowledgeable way I could at the time. What would you tell someone else who had to fight like you did to get where you are now? When they were ready I would tell them about my philosophy in life which is to learn to love the hills. I always trained on the hills as an athlete and this shaped my outlook on life. I developed strength and discipline which I needed to face the huge challenge that lay ahead of me. The hills, or obstacles, that we face in life keep coming, and when we embrace them and learn to love them then anything is possible!
Is there anything you would like to add? I believe my recovery was 10% physical and 90% mental. The battle is really in the mind and when you control your mind you control your destiny. I have done more since my accident then I ever would have done before. It was only when I was pushed to the very edge that I was really able to understand what I am capable of. I now understand that my accident has been a gift as it has taught me so much about life and living. Thank you Janine for sharing your story. Is there anything you would like to tell Janine or to share with her.

We belong to a medical aid, or medical insurance as many other people around the world call it. In South Africa, if you want quality health-care, going to a private hospital / practitioner is the way to go. But, this costs money and a lot of it and that is why belonging to a medical aid scheme is, so to say, a must, if you can afford it of course.
We belong to Discovery Health. Notably, one of the biggest medical aids in South Africa and I personally think, the most expensive too. I dont want to go into how rough their monthly premiums are each month, but believe me, when you need them to work for you, gosh, those premiums are a huge godsend indeed. We have been very lucky with Discovery. Or should I rather say, fortunate enough that we hadnt had the requirement for major surgeries and enduring endless days in hospital. Theyve paid for gore bladder stone removals, laparoscopies and so forth - nothing major at all.
But now, we are having a baby and that is where a medical aid really gets put to the test - with the upbringing of children and their endless ailments. Let the games begin.

Weight Loss is a real health issue with so many people today, and theres just so much conflicting information that its no wonder people dont know what to do or which plan to follow.
We used to think that eating low fat is most important, but now we hear eating low-carb is more important.
Cut meals out, or eat more meals each day?
Some promote dietary supplements, others doing it with diet changes.
Exercise using weights or aerobics?
Even with changes to diet and exercise routines, some are struggling with weight loss. Research is now showing why.
We now know that some of the foods we eat are resulting in digestive problems that make weight loss a bigger problem than simply changing our diet a bit, or exercising more. Research released recently by Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst supports this.
One such problem is deposits of harmful plaque, and another is harmful parasites. Both these issues make it increasingly difficult to maintain good health and a proper body weight, over time.
By making some simple changes to your daily routine, you can address these problems once and for all, and finally lose the weight you may have been struggling with for so long and not understanding why it was such a struggle.
There is no magic pill when it comes to weight loss, but there are solid facts.
We still need to watch what we eat, especially when it comes to certain starchy foods.
I think everyone agrees that exercise is still important, too.
Any harmful parasites or plaque deposits must be addressed first, though, for the typical diet and exercise changes to work.

It was about three years ago this month that the Governors proposal to direct the states tobacco settlement bonus dollars into a new Life Sciences Discovery Fund to advance state research efforts in health sciences passed the state legislature. The bill was a major victory for the Governor in the 2005 session and something the UW and many others worked hard to help get passed.
Well, here we are in 2008 and the first flow of monies from those bonus payments resulting from the Master Tobacco Settlement are coming into the aforementioned life sciences discovery fund. Yesterday, the Life Sciences Discovery Fund announced a total of $22 million in research awards from the fund to five research projects, three of which will go to researchers at or associated with the University of Washington and on the other two awards, the UW is a collaborating organization.

But now researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill抯 School of Medicine have shown that not all heart cells are created equal; in response to one signal to differentiate, some will act, while others lie in wait.
The discovery, made in frogs, or Xenopus, may lead to advances in understanding ?and ultimately treating ?congenital heart disease and heart attacks.
揟his is profoundly important work,?said Cam Patterson, M.D., professor of medicine, chair of cardiology and director of the Carolina Cardiovascular Biology Center. 揘ot only does it tell us about how stem cells differentiate to create the heart, but it provides us with knowledge that may very well help us to repair heart muscle after a heart attack.?
The study appears today (April 14) in the online issue of the journal Developmental Cell. It will be published in the print edition of the journal April 15.
To investigate the development of the heart, the researchers focused on a gene ?called CASTOR ?that has been implicated in stem cell differentiation in the fruit fly. Here, they manipulated the gene in a different organism ?frogs.
揟he study of the heart has its longest history in frogs. In fact, most of what we know about heart development has been learned in frogs,?said Frank Conlon, Ph.D., assistant professor of genetics in the UNC School of Medicine and senior author of the study.
First, Conlon and colleagues used small strings of nucleotides, or oligonucleotides, to mask the portions of genetic material that call for the assembly of the CASTOR protein in frogs. Once CASTOR was depleted in the frog embryos, the scientists watched to see how the heart would develop.
What they discovered was contrary to all previous notions of heart development. Instead of all the cells differentiating in harmony, a small subset of cells at the base of the heart remained in a state of infancy. When the researchers mapped the fate of these infant cells, or progenitors, they found that they normally would have given rise to the outer walls of ventricles of the adult heart.
This finding has ramifications for the use of progenitor cells for therapy, in which cells would be transplanted into the area of the organ injured by a heart attack in order to create healthy tissue. The problem is that the idea, while still theoretical, is based on all progenitors being the same.
揥hat we have found is that this belief simply isn抰 true,?Conlon said. 揑nstead, there appear to be at least two types of progenitors, and we think there may be many more.?
In order to identify which subsets of cells would be the most appropriate for treating a heart attack, scientists must figure out just how many different types of heart cell progenitors exist in the first place. Conlon is trying to do just that, by manipulating other genes in addition to CASTOR. He also hopes to verify his findings in an intermediary organism, such as a mouse model, before searching for genetic counterparts in humans.
